Capt. Joshua Addo

Capt. Joshua Nii Addo Addo is a distinguished maritime professional, educator, and industry leader with extensive experience in shipping, port administration, and maritime safety. He holds an M.A. in Port and Shipping Administration (Regional Maritime University, 2015), is a certified Master Mariner (Regional Maritime University, 2010), and earned a Certificate in Marine Surveying from Lloyd’s Maritime Academy, UK (2013).

With over eleven years of sea-going service as a Deck Officer and Master, Capt. Addo brings practical expertise to his academic and professional roles. Since February 2011, he has served as a Lecturer at the Regional Maritime University (RMU), where he trains the next generation of maritime professionals. His teaching portfolio includes STCW training, marine surveying, and advanced navigation, and he also serves as an External Examiner for the Ghana Maritime Authority, assessing Certificates of Competency for Deck Officers (Class 1, 2, and 3) under the STCW ’78 Convention as amended.

Beyond academia, Capt. Addo has held significant leadership positions. He is the Regional Director of Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) Ghana and the Director of Schulte Maritime Services Ghana Ltd (SMS Ghana), where he oversees operations and represents the company’s strategic interests in the region. Since its inception in 2012, SMS Ghana has successfully recruited and trained over 600 seafarers from the Regional Maritime University, with plans to recruit many more.

One of his most notable achievements is the establishment of the BSM Maritime Training Centre in Ghana, where he serves as Director. The Centre was created to provide hands-on training that bridges the gap between academic learning and practical experience, ensuring cadets are industry-ready and equipped with the skills required for modern maritime operations.

His contributions extend to international maritime initiatives. He is a member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) Work Group on On-Board Training, a Coordinator for the European Union Critical Maritime Routes in the Gulf of Guinea Project (EU-CRIMGO), and a Coordinator for the GOGIN Project (Gulf of Guinea Interregional Network), all aimed at enhancing maritime safety and security in West Africa.

Capt. Addo’s career reflects a rare blend of academic excellence, professional leadership, and practical sea experience. His work continues to strengthen Ghana’s maritime sector and contribute to global efforts in shipping safety, training, and governance.
